Having grown up in Europe, our founder, Lucy Sarkisian, learned that foods brought enjoyment and also nourished a healthy lifestyle. Lucy’s grandmother cooked simple and good foods from scratch. Meals were full of flavor and consisted of quality ingredients. Something had shifted in the food supply from then until now. Artificial flavoring has replaced the true flavor of foods. Hard-to-say ingredients and long ingredient panels have replaced short ingredient lists with known ingredients. We’ve gotten away from the real taste of food. We’ve artificially created foods that mask the natural taste of food. She believed that food could be enjoyed in its natural state, the way food was meant to be enjoyed.
When Lucy moved to the United States from Armenia at age 19 years, she had started to gain weight, but she couldn’t understand why. She had been eating well and she had been exercising, but it wasn’t enough—she had become iron-deficient. During this period, she had begun researching healthy living standards in order to understand how to reclaim her health. She had interviewed personal trainers, health professionals, and nutrition experts. One of her doctors had been too quick to prescribe medicine without even trying to get at the root cause as to why she had gained weight. She began to see a common thread of confusion for many people who had wanted to live a healthy lifestyle. People were often misled into buying ingredients claimed on the front of the label that conflicted with the ingredient list on the back of the label. Terms such as whole grain actually meant wheat flour in its actual state.
“We need to try to understand our bodies in order to understand how to heal them,” says Sarkisian. “A healthy lifestyle considers and engages the whole person.”
Sesame Seed Snacks
Staying healthy is a challenge. Our work lives bleed into the rest of our lives and it can be difficult to find time for self-care. The elusive work-life balance leaves us fatigued and unprepared for being at our best around the clock. And, depending upon whom you ask, health takes on different definitions, including whatever is currently culturally accepted until another ideology has taken its place. So, how can you know how to live a healthy lifestyle?
Our founder, Lucy Sarkisian, searched for healthy snacks to help keep her energized throughout the work week. She visited natural food and specialty stores with wide selections, but she had grown frustrated with the kind of foods which had been touted as healthy. These healthy foods had been loaded with long ingredient lists and often contained as much sugar as candy bars. Many snack bars were high in carbohydrates but low in fiber. She thought to herself that there had to be another way.
She began making snacks at home that delighted her family and friends with clean ingredients and good flavor. They became the catalyst for Treasure Trove sesame snack bars, our healthier take on sesame brittle. While other companies might focus on what is trending today, we travel the world and look back to timeless traditional foods—treasures from around the world that have something yet to offer healthy snacking in the U.S.
Inspired by the idea of unleashing your best self, Virago is a latin word defined as “female warriors.” Our woman-owned company looks to the wisdom that cultures around the world have long known and creates healthy snacks for the U.S. Work with us to bring your healthy snack ideas to market.
